Legalization of documents for submission abroad

The Department of International Public Law of the Ministry of Justice is responsible for legalization of documents according to the regulations of documents for submission to foreign country certified by notary.

Legalization of a document by the Ministry of Justice certifies that the document conforms to Georgian legislation, attests the validity of the signature of notary and of the seal.
The legal documents that are submitted for international use must be prepared by or in participation with state institutions of Georgia. The Ministry of Justice uses the special round billing seal and stamp for legalization.
If the official of Ministry of Justice suspects that the documents presented for legalization are fake or violate rules or are issued by the non-authorized notary, the official is required not to legalize the document and should take appropriate measures to deal with the illegal document.

The documents presented for legalization must be presented clearly and distinctly. The signature and the seal must figure clearly.
A document which contradicts existing Georgian legislation or violates the procedure required for an official document cannot be legalized. In addition, if legislation prohibits a document to submit abroad or is not otherwise eligible for certification may not be legalized.

The official is eligible to legalize the document after assuring that the document was prepared in accordance with legislation and procedure and that the notary fees have been paid.

The Ministry of Justice must legalize the document within 5 days from submission. The payment made for legalization may be reimbursed.
