Public Lecture on Juvenile Crime Issues

On February 4, 2011, Deputy Prosecutor General, David Sakvarelidze held a public lecture for the students and professors of the School of Law at the University of Georgia. David Sakvarelidze discussed specifics of juvenile crime, particularly focusing on changes, which have taken place in juvenile justice system. The discussion covered liberalization of juvenile criminal justice policy as well as individual projects, which are being implemented by the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor’s Office for prevention of crime committed by teenagers and juveniles.


Prosecutor’s Office Arrests lawyers for Money Extortion

Tbilisi Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia arrested lawyers Soso Jgharkava and Levan Melkadze with the charges of large-scale money extortion. Reportedly, Soso Jgharkava and Levan Melkadze offered a deal to Lia Gaikharashvili, whose husband, Sergo Doshoyan is serving his sentence for drug dealing. The lawyers promised to help them arrange a procedural deal with the law enforcers and release him on bail.


Tbilisi Prosecutor’s Office Presents Unique Book to National Library

The Prosecutor’s Office of Tbilisi has presented a unique bibliographic edition to the Illia Chavchavadze National Library. HISTORIE DE L’ART (History of Art) was issued in Paris in 1823 and there are just a few copies throughout the world. Hence the HISTORIE DE L’ART will become an interesting scientific source for art researchers in the National Library.


Community Service – Alternative to Imprisonment

The coordinating council of the Ministry of Correction and Legal Assistance and the Ministry of Justice joint project “Community Service” was held first in the Hotel Tbilisi Marriot. The topic of the seminar was one type of alternative sanctions – community service. Implementing the project is a priority for the MCLA. Representatives of the government and international organizations attended the meeting. The Minster of Correction and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze and Deputy Justice Minister, Giorgi Vashadze made opening remarks of the meeting.


Prosecutor’s Office Detains Ministry of Agriculture Officers

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the Constitutional Security Department conducted a joint operation and arrested high-ranking officers of the Ministry of Agriculture and senior employees of the Melioration Association.The monitoring revealed a corruption network, in which officers of the Agriculture Ministry and the heads of several melioration associations were involved.


Prosecutors and Children Lacking Family Care Take Part in Sports Competition

On February 5, 2011, employees of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia visited Urekhi orphanage. Prosecutors presented to the children sports inventory and took part in a sports competition - along with the children they played football. The football match took place on a stadium located on the territory of Urekhi orphanage. The event was opened by Batumi Regional Prosecutor, Avtandil Kiladze.


Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia Continues Employment of Probationers

On January, 29, 2011, one more probationer was hired with the help of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia. From today, Gela Arjevanidze will be working at the communal logistics service in Zestaponi and his salary will be 300 GEL. Arjevanidze is serving conditional sentence for larceny. The recommendation for employment has been initiated by Zestaponi Regional Prosecutor, Vakhtan Chumburidze  and Head of Probationary Bureau, M. Chaduneli.


Experts from International Center of Property Crime Investigation Held Training for Georgian Investigators

A special training is under way at the Training Center of Justice for the employees of investigation agencies. The subject of the training covers investigation of money-laundering and financial crimes. International experts of property crimes investigation of the Basel Institute together with the employees of investigation agencies of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia, discussed the following issues: money-laundering, retrieval of electronic evidences, determination of income sources, legal assistance etc.


Prosecutor’s Office Holds Charity Event for Tashiskari and Kojori Orphanages

On January 27, 2011, representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia marked Ninaoba (St. Nino Holiday) by visiting orphanages for children lacking family care. Khashuri Regional Prosecutor, Mikheil Chakulashvili brought to the children of Tashiskari orphanage gas stove, sweets and various gifts. Meanwhile, Old Tbilisi District Regional Prosecutor, David Zviadadze visited Lojori orphanage and presented to the children a refrigerator.


Prosecutor’s Office Holds Judo Tournament Among Gori Public Schools

On January 22, 2011, student of Gori public schools took part in a one-day judo tournament organized by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia. The tournament was held at the Gori Sports School Hall. More than 100 students from Gori, Kaspi, Khashuri and Kareli public schools matched each other in eight weight classes. Winners and runners-up received medals and diplomas, awarded by Gori Regional Prosecutor, Nikoloz Dgebuadze.
